Evacuations Ordered After Landslide Closes PCH in Rancho Palos Verdes
Evacuation Orders in Effect
On August 21, 2023, the Palos Verdes Peninsula was evacuated after a landslide closed a major highway. The Pacific Coast Highway, which runs along the coast in Rancho Palos Verdes, was closed for several hours after a landslide blocked the roadway.
Evacuation orders were issued for the following areas:
- Lunada Bay
- Valmonte
- Portuguese Bend
According to local police, downed trees, mud, and rocks were covering the roadway for over 300 feet.
Landslide Likely Due to Recent Rain
The landslide likely occurred as a result of recent heavy rains that have hit the area. According to the National Weather Service, over 10 inches of rain fell in the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the past week.
Heavy rains can cause the soil on hillsides to become saturated, which can lead to landslides.
When Will the Highway Reopen?
It is not clear when the Pacific Coast Highway will reopen. Caltrans crews are currently working to clear the roadway and make repairs.
According to local officials, the highway could remain closed for several days.
